Let me introduce myself!

Hi, I'm Emily (she/her), a board certified music therapist and avid tree-hugger.

My philosophy is rooted in the belief that each person is profoundly influenced by the systems they are part of and the relationships they engage in. My knowledge of ecological and relationship-centered approaches ensures that your therapy journey is holistic and transformative. I would love to connect and be a partner in your journey in wellness!

I completed my Bachelors of Music in Music Therapy at Nazareth College in 2017 as well as an 8-month internship at The Center for Discovery in the Catskills. During this time, I was able to formulate my personal approach to therapy and how I wish to connect with clients. My primary mode of music making involves improvisation on the piano and use of the guitar to make active music with other humans. I completed my Master's in Music Therapy with Endorsement in Mental Health Counseling at Slippery Rock University in 2024 and am working towards licensure as a licensed mental health counselor.

For the past 8 years I have been working in a variety of settings including special education, residential areas, community centers, and private practice. I have had the privilege of working with individuals age 2-60 years old with medical complexities, Austim, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, trauma, emotional behavioral disorders, and mental health concerns. Throughout the years I have learned so much from each client and hope to continue this journey with each person I connect with in the future.

I am a white, queer, cis-woman, based in Rochester, NY, living on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. This confederacy includes six Indigenous nations: the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora. I recognize that my identity offers me several privileges in the day-to-day world and strive to keep this in mind when working in a therapeutic setting.

Music Therapy

A Quick Introduction

What is music therapy?

Music Therapy is a holistic therapeutic approach that harnesses the intrinsic power of music and the collaborative process of engaging with it to facilitate healing, personal growth, and overall well-being. Music therapy is a transformative journey guided by a trained therapist, aimed at harmonizing the individual within their broader context, leading to positive growth.

Why music therapy?

I am a firm believer that music, both in its essence and through the process of engaging with it, holds the power to facilitate change and growth. Through music, we can create a safe and expressive space for you to explore your emotions, find healing, lovingly look at your relationships with others, and address your unique needs.

Who can engage in music therapy?

Music therapy is highly adaptable and can be tailored to the specific needs and goals of each individual or group, making it an inclusive and accessible form of therapy for a diverse range of people. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need any musical skills to engage in this type of therapy. The process is collaborative and supported by the therapist. You just need to be there, be present, and be open.
